Winnipeg police identified the victim of a weekend homicide as Sheldon Kostenko, 33.

Officers said his body was found in an apartment building in the 200 block of Morley Avenue in South Osborne on the weekend.

Police said the victim died from upper body injuries.

Kostenko didn't live in the apartment block where his body was found. It's believed he had been there visiting a friend.

Officers responded after a call from somewhere in the North End came in to police around 4 a.m. on Dec. 3  about a body in the South Osborne building.

Now, part of the investigation will be to determine how the caller knew about the body.

"(I) can't talk about the person who made the phone call. At this point, it's integral to the case," said Const. Rob Carver with Winnipeg police.

Kostenko's family issued a statement on Monday.

"Sheldon will be remembered as a caring, generous young man who loved life, family and friends. He was an avid sports and fitness enthusiast, and for the past several years has worked as a supported living counsellor for people with disabilities," said his family in the statement.

Relatives also said they did not have any other details regarding Kostenko's death, other than what police have announced.

"A private family service will held in coming days, and family members wish to extend their appreciation to those who have extended condolences at this difficult time," said family.

Anyone with information regarding the case is asked to call investigators at 986-6508 or Crime Stoppers at 786-8477.
