The body of an elderly woman was found in a bin by workers at a BFI cardboard recycling facility in the RM of Rosser.

RCMP are treating the death as suspicious.

Around 9 a.m. on Dec. 1, RCMP were called to the Prairie Green landfill facility, north of Winnipeg off Highway 7, after employees spotted the body.

"It is extremely unusual. I can't say I've run into this particular set of circumstances before and that just adds to the question of how it came to be," said Const. Miles Hiebert, an RCMP spokesperson.

Employees at the facility who found the body are now getting counselling. Officials at the plant said what happened is tragic.

Police believe the body had been in a cardboard recycling bin that was picked in Winnipeg and dumped into a larger truck, before being transported to the plant in the RM of Rosser.

Rolly Courchaine has been driving a dump truck for 10 years. He said it would be easy for someone to pick up a load and not notice a body.

Officers have not yet determined the identity of the victim. RCMP are now looking through lists of missing persons in the hopes of identifying the woman.

Families of missing women have also been contacting the RCMP for information.

"I can understand the stress and anxiety that this would cause that have loved ones missing for sometime. As you can imagine we are making every effort to try and identify this woman," said Const. Hiebert.

An autopsy was scheduled to be performed Thursday.

RCMP continue to investigate.
