Grief counsellors were brought in to help students and staff at Roblin's Goose Lake High School after one of their classmates died in a shooting earlier in the week.

A 16-year-old girl was found dead from a gunshot wound in her home just east of Roblin on Nov. 10.

RCMP are treating her death as a homicide. A 17-year-old male was also found inside the home suffering from an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound, said RCMP. He is in hospital.

The 17-year-old male is also a student at Goose Lake High School in Roblin. The town is about 235 km northwest of Brandon.

Students at the school returned to classes for the first time since the shooting on Friday.

A statement was read out to the school about what happened to the victim.

"I think we're doing as best as we can. It's a pretty sombre mood," said Heather Becker, a student at the school.

"We're close. It's affecting everyone," said Morgan Hunter, another student.

The student played on the school's volleyball and basketball teams.

The school's principal described her as quiet, but confident.

"She was very pleasant, very respectful. (You) really got a sense that she was very well-respected," said Derrick Cameron.

Police investigators are still trying to determine what happened.

"We need to interview the young man in hospital as soon as possible and we continue to gather evidence as we go along," said Const. Miles Hiebert, a spokesperson for RCMP.

The 17-year-old male was airlifted to hospital in Winnipeg in critical condition following the incident, but was later upgraded to stable.

A funeral for the girl is scheduled for Nov. 17 at 1 p.m. at the Roblin Community Centre.
