A group of anglers got an unhappy surprise Monday morning.

Several ice shacks on the Red River in Selkirk were vandalized overnight.

"This is the first time I brought my shack out here," said angler Warren Willis. "But if this keeps on going, I don't think I'll bring her back here!"

One of the shacks wasn't just vandalized - it was set on fire. The shack later exploded.

"It's unfortunate that people have to come and ruin someone's fun," said angler Jason Hay. "They've put a lot of work into some of these ice fishing shacks."

It's unclear exactly when the fire was set. RCMP say it was reported at 2:00 a.m. Monday.

Witnesses didn't see any suspicious people or vehicles at that time.

Selkirk’s mayor, Larry Johanson, says crime is sadly everywhere.

He says "this incident is far outweighed by the many positive experiences people have here on the Red River."

Still going forward, Hay says ice shack owners will have to watch out for each other.

"You do it for them, they'll do it for you hopefully," said Hay.

RCMP are investigating.
