The sister of a Winnipeg man discovered in a West End garbage bin is looking for answers.

Charlotte Williams tells CTV News her younger brother, Garnet Samuel Walter Williams, who went by ‘Sam’, was a great person.

"He was friendly, caring, happy, and spiritual,” Williams said in a phone call Sunday.

Williams said learning of her brother's death has been painful and shocking.

"It's still sinking in. Just awful," she said. "You don't wake up and expect a family member to be found in a dumpster."

Williams said her brother lived in Dryden, Ontario for about 15 years before moving to Winnipeg around 2005 or 2006.

It has been about 10 years since Williams saw her brother. She said the way he looks in the photo is how she remembers him-- happy and healthy.

Williams said she doesn't know the kind of lifestyle he led, but tried to find him over the years. In June, she said her brother added her as a friend on Facebook, and she sent him her phone number, but he never called.

"He was a gentle person. He wouldn't hurt anybody."

Williams said she believes someone, or a group of people, hurt her brother and hopes the person or people responsible are found.

"I want to know who did this and get them off the street," she said.

Winnipeg police identified the body of Garnet Walter Williams, 43, on Friday.
