The landscape surrounding Rick and Amy Proven’s home has completely shifted according to the couple who moved to the area 26 years ago.

It was supper time Monday night, when Rick Proven saw a funnel cloud heading towards his home in Erickson, Manitoba, 250 kilometers northwest of Winnipeg.

He knew his family was in danger.

"I saw it down the valley and I thought boy I hope that thing doesn't hit us," said Rick Proven.

He and his wife, Amy, got their kids and grandchildren into the basement.

"We hung tight for about ten minutes and that's all it took to do all of this damage," he said.

The Provens watched the destruction from a small window.

"We were watching the trees swaying and you could hear, it was terrifying, but we were trying not to be terrified for the kids," said Amy Proven.

When it was all over the family realized just how lucky they were

They saw a path of destruction just metres away from the side of the house.

There were fallen trees, everything in the yard destroyed but the house was untouched.

"It could have been so much worse if it would have hit our house I don't know what would have happened, just glad we were safe and downstairs with our kids," said Amy Proven.
