A day after Greg Selinger held on to his job by his fingernails, one political pundit said the premier's toughest battle could be on the horizon.

Political scientist Paul Thomas said Selinger must now make the peace with those who openly challenged him in his party with only a year to go before the next election.

To do that, Thomas said Selinger may need to meet face to face with people and do a better job of listening to his caucus when they have concerns.

Even if Selinger is successful in uniting the NDP, Thomas said the odds of the party winning the next election against Brian Pallister and the Conservatives are remote.

“I think it's probably inevitable that they'll lose the next election. It will take either a blunder on the part of Mr. Pallister, or some fortunate good luck striking oil underneath the legislative building,” said Thomas.

Selinger defeated Theresa Oswald by a mere 33 votes at the NDP leadership convention over the weekend.
