RCMP say speed and alcohol are believed to be factors in a motorcycle crash that killed a 48-year-old man over the weekend.

Police said the collision happened Sunday just after midnight. Dauphin RCMP received a report of a motorcycle crash on Highway 10 about 11 kilometres north of Ashville.

An investigation revealed a group of motorcycles was travelling south on the highway, when the lead motorcyclist noticed a couple of deer on the shoulder of the road and started to slow down.

Police said a second motorcyclist rear-ended the lead bike causing the bike to go down.

The remaining motorcyclists were able to stop and avoid the collision.

The driver of the lead motorcycle, a 21-year-old man from Ochre River, and his passenger, a 21-year-old Dauphin woman, were transported to hospital.

The driver of the second bike, a 48-year-old Dauphin man, was pronounced dead at the scene. Police are not releasing his name.

RCMP said all drivers were wearing helmets.
