Coun. Thomas Steen (Elmwood-East Kildonan) will be taking a leave of absence from city hall while facing charges.

He issued a statement to council Wednesday.

"In response to allegations in recent media reports I would like to advise you that I will be taking some time to deal with a private personal matter," wrote Steen.

The news comes after Steen turned himself in to police Tuesday.

The former Winnipeg Jet is facing assault charges.

He was released on a promise to appear in court and has not been formally charged.

While under investigation, Steen cannot participate in meetings of the police board where he sits as a member.

If he is convicted, Steen could lose his council seat, according to city rules.

Reports said the assault allegations stem from an incident between Steen and a woman known to him at a Garden City restaurant.

Steen will be paid during his leave from city hall.

Councillors said that, despite his absence from council, his ward will be looked after.

“They are going to be represented. There are people here at city hall – Coun. Steen's assistant is very capable to help out. Other councillors will jump into the fray to help out,” said Coun. John Orlikow (River Heights - Fort Garry).
