Quick action from a customer helped stop a robbery and assault in progress Saturday night.

Just after 9 p.m. a man with a shirt over his face went into a business in the 500 block of Selkirk Avenue and demanded cash from the 55-year-old man working, police said.

The incident quickly escalated, though, when the man tried to steal the entire cash register and began assaulting the man working.

A customer in the store, a 44-year-old man, saw the fight and stepped in. The man was restrained, and police were immediately called.

Stuart Norman Spence, 21, is now facing multiple charges including robbery with violence and breach of probation.

Spence has been detained at the Winnipeg Remand Centre.
