The Heart and Stroke Foundation said Manitoba needs a dedicated stroke unit at one of Winnipeg's hospitals.

The organization said we are the only province in Canada without a stroke unit, adding it can improve mortality rates and outcomes for stroke patients by 30 per cent.

Manitoba Health Minister Erin Selby said that, while the province is studying the idea, there's no commitment yet for a stroke unit.

Selby said her priorities remain on ensuring a family doctor for every person in Manitoba and helping cancer patients.

Manitoba's Conservatives plan to introduce a motion Thursday at the legislature calling for a stroke unit.
