Winnipeg police are warning the public of a spike in vehicle break-ins.

They said that the downtown is a particular problem area, as many people work and attend events there, making it easier for thieves to go from car to car.

According to WPS, thefts in the downtown increased by 21 per cent over the summer, but they said that number is likely even higher.

Police have some tips to help reduce vehicle break-ins:
- parking in a well-lit area, off the street in your driveway or locked garage
- do not leave valuables in your vehicle, or secure them in your trun
- make sure your vehicle is locked whenever you leave it, even if just for a moment

“One of the challenges that we're facing is people are not reporting the theft from motor vehicle,” Const. Rejeanne Caron said. “Whether it's because they think, what are police going to do with that. We take that information very seriously."

Police said the information is critical in determining crime trends and deploying police resources.
