Southwestern Manitoba is in the grips of bone-chilling temperatures Saturday morning. Environment Canada has issued extreme cold warnings for the region, including Brandon, west to the Saskatchewan border, south to the Canada-U.S. border, and north into the Winnipegosis area.

With the wind chill, temperatures will feel like -40 Celsius or lower.

The temperatures are caused by a ridge of arctic high pressure that has pushed into the Prairies Saturday morning.

Winnipeg’s daytime high of -20 C won’t feel much warmer, with windchill making it feel like -33 C. On the same say last year, Winnipeg's high was 0 C.

Expect to see similar temperatures throughout the week in southern Manitoba. Skies will be clear and daytime highs won’t reach much higher than the low-minus-teens any day this week.

Environment Canada also issued extreme cold warnings starting in northwestern BC, going west through central and northern Alberta, central and southwestern Saskatchewan and southeastern Manitoba.

The temperature is forecast to drop to the low minus 30s, and with the wind chill, it will feel like minus 40 or colder.

Extreme cold warnings are issued when very cold temperatures or wind chill creates an elevated risk to health such as frost bite and hypothermia.
