Motorcycle riders from two different advocacy groups rallied in front of the legislative building Saturday.

One event was organized to raise awareness that May is motorcycle safety month.

"Particularly when you are driving in the city; check your mirrors, do a shoulder check. Make sure there isn't a motorcyclist there,” said Doug Houghton from the Coalition of Manitoba Motorcycle Groups.

A group wearing red shirts was also at the legislature with another message.

Those riders said they are unhappy with Manitoba Public Insurance rates for motorcyclists.

"They’re unfair. They're charging us too much for motorcycle insurance in this province,” said Steven Choquette from the group MPI hates motorcyclists.

In an email, Brian Smiley from MPI said motorcycle rates in Manitoba have decreased 25.8 percent over the last five years.

In December, MPI announced it would decrease rates for motorcycles to 5.8 per cent for the 2015 and 2016 years.

Every year, motorcycles are involved in an average of 220 collisions in Manitoba.
