A new trial date has been set in the death of a Manitoba girl more than three decades ago.

Mark Edward Grant will be tried on a charge of second-degree murder in January of 2017.

Four years ago, Grant was convicted of killing 13-year-old Candace Derksen.

The Manitoba Court of Appeal then overturned the conviction in 2013, a ruling that was later upheld by the Supreme Court of Canada, citing an error by the trial judge.

Derksen's mother, Wilma, told CTV Wednesday justice is taking its course and the family needs patience to wait and see what will happen.

She said they’re good at waiting.

Wilma said the family is glad to know a date is set and trust everything will unfold as it necessary.
