A Manitoba oil rig worker risked his own life to rescue people after a two vehicle crash near Brandon on Friday night.

Johnny Hewitt and a co-worker were driving along Highway 1 west of Brandon Friday night when they came upon an accident scene.

The pair noticed a pair of vehicles in the ditch, one of which was on fire with two people trapped inside.

Hewitt, who is a body-builder, and his co-worker were able to bend the damaged doorframe in half so they could pull the men out.

"That's when we heard a baby crying in the other vehicle,” said Hewitt. “There was a mother and a one year old boy in the vehicle.  So me and Dale, we went down and proceeded to extract them.  We broke out the windows, I jumped in, passed the baby to Dale, then passed the woman to Dale."

RCMP said the 34-year-old mother and her one-year-old child, from Regina, were taken to hospital with non-life threatening injuries after being rescued from a Ford Escape.

The 48-year-old driver and a 30-year-old passenger of the Pontiac G6 sedan that had burned were also taken to hospital with non-life threatening injuries.

RCMP said initial investigation revealed the Pontiac and a red Dodge pickup truck had been travelling east-bound at a high speeds when the Pontiac lost control and hit the westbound Ford.

RCMP said a 27-year-old man from Dauphin was driving the Dodge pick-up truck and was later located.

Police said alcohol and speed are believed to be factors in the crash and the investigation is ongoing.
