Winnipeg's police chief says the city's police board, which he sits on, could tackle the problem of missing and murdered indigenous women.

Chief Devon Clunis was responding to a presentation by mayoral candidate David Sanders, who supports calls for a national inquiry.

As an organization, the police service mourns the missing and murdered women, Clunis said. He says the board should take a lead role on the issue, and says he would take any direction it gives him.

Clunis would not comment on the concept of a national inquiry, saying that's up to politicans.

Mayoral candidates are expected to respond to the issue Friday as well.
