Attempts are being made to ensure people living in Churchill have heat this winter.

Premier Brian Pallister said Manitoba Hydro officials are exploring options to convert propane to hydro in government and private homes in the community.

Propane shipments are in jeopardy with the closure of the rail line to the northern town. The rail line was damaged due to spring flooding.

Pallister said there are around 100 private homes in the community. The remaining 337 homes are owned by Manitoba Housing, 304 of which are heated using propane.

A provincial government spokesperson said there are no statistics to show how many privately owned homes are on electric-only systems, and how many use natural gas.
