Manitoba RCMP said a 41-year-old man was pulled over while riding a lawn mower around 2 a.m. Saturday.

Officers on patrol noticed a man on a John Deere Riding Mower travelling on Bridge Street, heading northbound towards Highway 1 in the RM of Headingley.

In a tweet, RCMP said the man figured it was “responsible” to ride his lawn mower instead of a car to get smokes at a nearby gas station.

A 39-year-old woman was also along for the ride.

The man is facing charges for impaired operation of a motor vehicle.

RCMP said while it does not name lawn mowers specifically in the Highway Traffic Act, a lawn mower is not allowed on streets or highways. If the driver was sober, traffic laws were being obeyed, and safety was not an issue, it is unlikely a charge would be laid, said RCMP.

Officials said the issue in this case was that the driver was impaired by alcohol.

He was released on a promise to appear in court in Winnipeg on Aug. 23.
