It was an alarming night for some hotel guests after multiple shots rang out from the lobby of Canad Inns at the Health Sciences Centre.

The shots were fired inside Starbucks, which is in the lobby of the hotel, around 10 p.m. Sunday.

Winnipeg police said it does not appear anyone was hit by the shots, but the incident has left witnesses shaken.

Police said two men, one carrying a firearm, confronted a third man inside the lobby prior to the shots being fired.

“Clearly there was a brief and volatile confrontation, or meeting of sorts where our victim quickly made a decision to flee,” Const. Jason Michalyshen said. “He made significant efforts to flee that area.”

According to information released by Winnipeg police Sunday night, the victim ran behind a counter and three shots were fired.

There were no injuries and all three men left the area.

“We’re only acknowledging property damage,” Michalyshen said. “We’re so thankful no one else was caught in the middle of this.”

Michalyshen said there were “quite a few” people inside at the time.

“We have multiple individuals who appear to be focused on each other. There is no information to support that this is some sort of random act to hurt or harm members of the public.”

Steve Spiery was in the lobby with his wife when he heard the shots.

“I heard screaming, three gun shots, I guess, and I just pushed my wife in the elevator and pressed up and that’s about it,” Spiery said. “I saw two, three girls screaming and running I knew something was happening.”

George Prociuk stayed at Canad Inns Sunday night. He and his wife travelled from Dauphin for a medical appointment at Health Sciences Centre. Prociuk said he was in the lobby moments after the shooting.

Prociuk said when he came down to the lobby to go outside for a cigarette a security officer advised against it.

“He said, ‘well you better get back to your room there’s some trouble downstairs here and it’s pretty serious,’” said Prociuk. “If we would’ve came down earlier we probably would’ve saw what happened. It’s scary.”

The Winnipeg Police Service’s Tactical Support Unit, Air1, Canine Unit and general patrol members responded after the gunfire was reported to police.

Investigators found and seized spent shell casings at the scene for further analysis.

Police said the suspects left the scene in a black or charcoal-coloured SUV with a roof rack.

So far, none of the men involved have been identified.

Members of the Major Crimes Unit are continuing to investigate.

Police describe one of the suspects as an Aboriginal male with a medium build, black hair and some facial hair. This suspect is believed to have a gun.

The other suspect is described by police as black male, 185 centimetres tall with a skinny build and facial hair.

Police ask anyone with information on the incident to contact the Major Crimes Unit at 204-986-6219, or Crime Stopper at 204-786-8477.
