Spring has officially sprung, and it’s come in like a lion when it comes to litter.

Many of the streets in Winnipeg are filled with cigarette butts, coffee cups and other assorted trash.

"Right now we're at the worst we could possibly be in terms of litter on our streets,” said Tom Ethans from Take Pride Winnipeg.

Take pride Winnipeg is in the middle of its annual spring litter index, ranking the streets on a scale from one to four – with four being the most filthy.

This year, Ethans has found a lot of fours – and one that’s even worse.

"It's a seven or an eight. That's how bad it is," said Ethans.

It’s located on a long stretch on the south Perimeter between St. Anne's and St Mary’s road: builder’s garbage from a nearby construction project that has blown into the ditches along the road.

Qualico said they pay thousands of dollars each spring and fall to clean up their construction sites, but they haven't been able to get their teams out yet.

"It was a sudden spring, and we phoned the scouts that we like to partner with to clean it up, and make a good contribution to them. But we got to wait for it to thaw out, because it's still frozen in place,” said Eric Vogan with Qualico Communities Winnipeg.

Vogan promises Qualico will clean up the mess as soon as it physically can.

Take pride Winnipeg hopes the rest of the city will follow their example, and clean up litter wherever it's found.

The city's spring cleaning efforts are expected to begin around the second week of April.

The city said overnight temperatures need to be above zero for work to begin.
