The RCMP have started an investigation into a possible drunk driving incident after a car caught fire in a single vehicle crash on Provincial Road 18 Friday evening.

RCMP said a witness to the crash was behind the vehicle before it veered off and ended up in the ditch on fire.

RCMP said the witness pulled over to help the driver but he left on foot before emergency services arrived.

The vehicle has not yet been identified. RCMP said that will take additional time as the “vehicle was consumed by fire.”

The driver, a 65-year-old man from the rural municipality of Norfolk Treherne, was found a short distance away lying in a ditch.

The man was prohibited from driving, RCMP said.

The man was taken to Brandon Correctional Centre where he faces possible charges of impaired driving, refusing an alcohol test and driving while prohibited.

Norfolk Treherne is about 125 kilometres southwest of Winnipeg.
