Winnipeg police have charged a 37-year-old man with possessing and trafficking a drug they say is a more toxic variant of the drug fentanyl.

On Monday, officers from the East District Community Support Unit, with the assistance of the Tactical Support Team executed a search warrant at a hotel in the West End of Winnipeg.

As a result of the warrant, officers located and seized 1,477 blotter tabs. Investigators suspect the tabs may be carfentanil with an estimated street value of approximately $30,000.

WPS said they are unable to state conclusively at this time whether the substance seized was, in fact, carfentanil pending results of lab testing.

Grayson Richard Parris from Winnipeg has been charged with numerous offences, including possessing scheduled substance for the purpose of trafficking, possessing a scheduled substance and possessing proceeds of crime.

Parris was remanded into custody.
