History

  • Winnipeg North went Labour after the Winnipeg strike of 1919 with Abe Heaps as MP 1925-1940.
  • After a term with Liberal Charles Booth, it was CCF from 1945-1958 with Alistair Stewart.
  • Tory Murray Smith served one term, then New Democrat David Orlikow from 1962-1988. He lost that year to Liberal Rey Pagtakhan.
  • In 1993, Pagtakhan won with the NDP’s Judy Wasylycia-Leis second.
  • In 1997, the riding boundaries changed to include more of Winnipeg's north centre, and thus changed its name to that, even though most of the old riding was in Winnipeg Centre.
  • Pagtakhan went to the new Winnipeg North–St. Paul where he won in 1997 and 2000.
  • Wasylycia-Leis won big in North Centre in 1997 and 2000.
  • In 2004, she won again in the new Winnipeg North riding over Pagtakhan.
  • In 2006 and 2008, Wasylycia-Leis had huge majorities, but quit April 2010. Later that year, and again in 2014, she was an unsuccessful candidate for mayor of Winnipeg.
  • A November 2010 byelection was won by Liberal Kevin Lamoureux, who won again in the 2011 general election.
