Winnipeg police have charged a 22-year-old man in connection with an armed robbery at a grocery store Tuesday afternoon after witnesses tripped and stopped him from leaving the area.

Police said the man was wearing a balaclava and armed with a knife when he entered a grocery store in the 500 block of Main Street around 3:30 p.m.

Police said the man tried to leave the store with a cash and cigarettes before an employee attempted to stop him by blocking the exit.

Police said the man broke through the store window and attempted to escape but was tripped by a witness. The man then dropped the knife and the bag of stolen property.

Police said the man tried to grab the bag but was held back by several witnesses until police arrived.

Police said the bag of stolen property was taken by another unknown person before police could arrive.

Steven Sealy, 22, has been charged with numerous charges including wearing a disguise with intent and possess of weapon dangerous for public purpose.
