A dog is dead, and a woman is lucky to be alive after a sudden trailer fire at a Gimli campground this morning.

Gary MacGregor, Gimli's fire chief, said it looks like the trailer was hit by lightning around five this morning.

A woman sleeping inside her trailer at the Autumnwood RV Campground when she woke up to find her curtains on fire.

MacGregor said she jumped out the window, but her dog couldn't escape, and later died of smoke inhalation.

Campers said they heard a loud bang and that's when they think the lightning hit.

Janet Johnson and her husband said the fire created a chaotic scene and tried to save the dog.

"We quickly jumped out of bed, my husband ran to the trailer, and she was yelling that her dog was inside , so he went to try and get the door open, and get the dog out, and it [the trailer] just went up so fast, very very fast".

Johnson said the fire was a terrifying experience. Many campers came out of their trailers to seeing what was going on while emergency personnel were telling everyone to stay back.

MacGregor said it was sad the woman lost her dog, but she was lucky to be alive and escape the fire.
