About 150 volunteers started building at 7:30 a.m. on Saturday and by the end of the day, Brooklands School had a brand new play structure.

Last month, the school was awarded a grant to help build new playground equipment and, since then, community members have helped raise money to cover the additional costs.

Teresa Armstrong, a library technician at Brooklands School, was one of the many staff members who spent the day helping build the play structure.

She said that before Saturday, the students went without adequate playground equipment for two years.

"It's such a good thing for the kids and the community, even the kids who don't go here to have something to come and play on," she said.

The new play area will be dedicated to the memory of the 21 fallen Brooklands soldiers killed in action during their service to Canada.
