If city administrators get their way, Winnipeg residents could soon be responsible for clearing snow from the city sidewalks adjacent to their properties.

The proposal is in the pedestrian and cycling strategies report.

If adopted, people will have 24 hours from the time the snow stops falling to shovel down to bare pavement.

It calls for penalties to be imposed if residents fail to clear the sidewalk.

Currently, city workers take care of snow removal on sidewalks.

The proposal still needs the approval of city council.
