The City of Winnipeg released details for the mosquito fogging program that will begin Saturday evening at 9:30 p.m. if weather permits.

The spraying schedule for the first night focuses on the southwest quadrant of the city.

The city announced Friday that fogging would commence because larviciding and residual treatments to control mosquito populations were no longer sufficient to control adult nuisance mosquitoes.

The mosquito trap count updated Saturday showed a city-wide average of 160 and one trap near Assiniboine Park had a count of 2624.

The city said requested buffer zones will be respected and crews will not spray within 90 metres of homes that have requested one.

The city has extended hours at the Insect Control Branch for residents who still wish to register their properties for buffer zones.

The office at 1539 Waverley Street will be open between 8:00 a.m. and 3:00 p.m. Saturday.

People wishing to register for a buffer zone will be required to do so in person and present a piece of identification that ties them to the address being registered.

The city said a 72-hour turn around time is required for buffer zones to be enacted.
