Multiple workers at Red River College could be soon hit with layoff notices.

On Monday, several food services workers at the college spoke with CTV News.

They said they were informed at a meeting that their jobs will likely be contracted out.

They’ve also been told the contractor will need new employees. There is a chance some existing workers will find employment through the new contractor, but others won’t get the chance.

Some of the workers have been on the job for nearly 20 years.

“You’ve been here so long and then for them to come and say your jobs are gone – it’s very hard,” said Sandy Joyal, a cook at Red River College.

Sources told CTV News the changes are being implemented as cost-savings measures.

Representatives from Red River College wouldn’t comment on Monday. They said they expect to speak publicly at a later date.

The workers’ union expects the first wave of layoffs will happen in January, with more to come in May.
