Firefighters responded to an explosion and blaze that burned multiple vehicles in the parking lot of the St. James Superstore and injured one person.

Cesar Ignacio was inside shopping at the time.

"We were inside first and we heard a loud bang inside and when I came out I (saw) that van on fire already,” said Ignacio.

Crews responded to the blaze in the parking lot near Sargent Avenue and St. James Street shortly before noon Monday.

The explosion and fire injured a man. Police said he was listed in hospital in stable condition.

A van was destroyed and three other vehicles damaged.

Sources said the van may have been transporting a propane tank.

CAA spoke Monday on safe ways to transport propane.

"The propane tank always (needs) to be stored in an upright position and you want to make sure it's secure and stays in that position, so when you're driving it's not going to roll around and turn on its side," said Ken Francis, a CAA mechanic.

Officials continue to investigate the cause of the fire and have not yet released word on its exact cause.
