Winnipeg fire crews battled both fire and ice into the beginning of the week as multiple blazes forced them into the deep freeze.

A garage fire on Edderton Avenue in Fort Garry Monday morning caused significant damage but no injuries. CTV was told on the scene that the house appeared to be unoccupied and had signs of recent renovations.

A fire early Monday morning in the North End sent one man to hospital in stable condition and caused significant damage to two homes in the 600 block of Pritchard Avenue. Damage is estimated at over $250,000 between the two properties. The cause is unknown.

Frigid temperatures created extra difficulty for firefighters in Charleswood Sunday night. Around 8:30 p.m. a garage on Miramar Road went up in flames and extinguishing it took longer than usual in the -33C weather. Fire crews rotated shifts through a rehab unit to warm up. Water used to fight the fire froze and frosted equipment and firefighters. Damage is estimated at $180,000. The cause is still under investigation.
