The I-29 Highway in North Dakota is closed from Fargo to Hillsboro due to water over the road, officials announced Monday morning.

There are detours in effect for northbound and southbound traffic.

Officials say the flooding they are seeing now is unprecedented in Cass County. Four families have been rescued since the weekend. There is still no exact number on how many homes are flooded.

About 60 miles of roadway in Cass County are covered in water and closed.

About 500,000 sandbags have been used so far in Cass County.

Cass County Sheriff Paul Laney said the water is so deep in some areas the only way in or out is by boat or helicopter.

Cass County officials said it will take time to assess the extent of the damage. Along with the Red River, there are at last four other rivers that have been experiencing flooding in the area.
