Officials with Manitoba Health are keeping a close eye on a measles outbreak around Lethbridge, Alta.

The province’s lead doctor on communicable disease control said Manitoba has not had a case of measles since 2010.

“There’s always the possibility that people travelling from that province could be coming to Manitoba,” said Dr. Tim Hilderman.

He said part of the reason measles hasn’t appeared in Manitoba in such a long time is that annual immunization rates are between 80 and 90 per cent.

However, he said there are some pockets of the province where the numbers are much lower than that.

“Those groups are particularly at risk for the start or continuing development of a measles outbreak, or any vaccine-preventable illness outbreak,” he said.

He urges all Manitoba parents to make sure their children have up-to-date vaccinations.
