Winnipeg police confirmed Friday afternoon they're investigating after a body was found in the 700 block of Simcoe Street.
Friday morning, officers initially said they were investigating "suspicious circumstances."
Sources said a decomposed body was found wrapped in a bag in a backyard, with the remains so badly decomposed that investigators had to use a tray to scoop them up.
Officers were called to the area around 7 p.m. on Thursday and taped off the scene.
Friday morning, the medical examiner was called in to collect the remains.
Residents said the home hasn't been lived in for many months.
"I'm scared because I'm living near where it happened so I'm a little bit worried about security," said Fatima Valenzuela.
In April, another decomposed body was found near a dumpster just two blocks away. It was also wrapped in a bag. The remains were later identified as those of Caroline Sinclair, 25. She had been missing since 2011.
Police said it's too early in the investigation to say whether there are links between the April and June incidents.
"We're keeping them separate, but like in any investigation or investigations, police officers have to keep an open mind and explore all possibilities," said Const. Jason Michalyshen.
Members of the homicide unit have been called to investigate on Simcoe, which is not unusual when a body is found. On Friday, police had not ruled the dead a murder.
An autopsy will have to be done to determine the cause of death.
Officers also continue to investigate Carolyn Sinclair's death after her body was discovered in April. CTV News is told police have had people in for questioning, but so far no arrests have been made.
