Manitoba Public Insurance is facing criticism for how they are allocating funds.

A list of promotional items bought by MPI over the last 12 months was released on Thursday. The list shows MPI spent more than $130,000 on promotional items over 12 months, including keychains, shoelaces and thunder sticks.

Progressive Conservative MPI critic Kelvin Goertzen said the items are an unnecessary use of spending, especially when MPI is looking to increase Autopac rates by 3.4 per cent next year.

MPI released a statement to CTV News.

“The purchase of promotional items does not in any way contribute to the proposed rate increase. As a road safety leader in the province, Manitoba Public Insurance often uses promotional items to reinforce road safety messaging relating to drinking and driving, distracted driving, speeding and seatbelt use,” said MPI.

MPI is also facing criticism after hiring their former CEO under a consulting contract that would pay her $50,000. Marilyn McLaren stepped down from this position on Wednesday but will still walk away with about $24,000.
