Winnipeg police are warning the public about a scam that attempts to bilk its victims out of hundreds of dollars with promises of big cash rewards and a luxury car.

Officers have received about 12 complaints about the scam, that promises victims $2.5 million and a Mercedes Benz if they send between $200 and $400 to claim their prize, police said.

The person making the calls has been described as having a strong Jamaican accent and claims to be associated with legitimate organizations, said police.

Police are asking anyone who receives this type of call to not send money and to notify the Canadian Anti-Fraud Centre at 1-888-495-8501.

Police also reminded citizens if they receive a call like this to hang up immediately, adding if a prize is legitimately won, there should be no cost to the winner.
