A small group of protesters blocked traffic Friday morning and into the afternoon on Portage Avenue near the Perimeter Highway.

The group, called Winnipeg Indigenous Activist Alliance, put the call out earlier this month for communities across Canada to block railways, highways and ports today. As well, they're asking people not to buy, fly or work.

The goal is to impact the Canadian economy for a day and demand an inquiry into missing and murdered indigenous women.

"We chose this section because people coming and going will be able to see when all these things are happening. (When) people are going around in their daily life, they don’t understand the issues. We’re trying to bring some kind of awareness to what's happening," said organizer Sandy Banman.

The protest wrapped up around 3 p.m. Friday.
