Some lessons teach you new skills, some open your eyes to new theories and ideas.

CancerCare Manitoba is hoping one lesson saves lives.

Educators with CancerCare are visiting more than 3,600 students in 40 Manitoba schools to discuss ways to prevent cancer.

"We really believe the kids are the ones we need to reach because they take the message home to their parents and integrate it into their own lives," said CancerCare director of education Joan Stephens.

The lesson covers the basics:

  • Protecting your skin from the sun
  • Eating well
  • Seeing a doctor regularly
  • Don't smoke

"If you follow those you can reduce your risk by 50 to 90-per cent," said Stephens.

When CTV News caught up with one lesson at Elwick Community School on Maberley Road, it seemed the Grade 3 students were having a good time with their lesson.

The students get to make a UV bracelet they can keep and wear.

When the suns UV rays hit the bracelet the beads change colour; making it a visual reminder to protect their skin this summer.

"I feel they walk away having learned a lot," Stephens said.
