Manitoba is taking a key step to better treat prostate cancer. Thousands of men are diagnosed with it every year, and now a new prostate tumour-bank may shed some light on better treatment options.
"If you live long enough, you're going to get it," said Dr. Jeff Saranchuck. Dr. Saranchuck runs the Prostate Centre at CancerCare Manitoba and is now overseeing the development of a new prostate tumour bank.
"We need better information to determine which tumours are a threat to a patient's health and require therapy, and those which can be safely watched," he explained to CTV's Maralee Caruso.
The tumour bank is scheduled to open within the year.
CancerCare Manitoba is still trying to raise money to set up the tumor bank.
A fundraising dinner is scheduled for April 29 at the Winnipeg Convention Centre.
