Winnipeggers are invited to lift a glass in memory of the late NDP leader Jack Layton Wednesday evening, at just one of several events across the country marking the one-year anniversary of his death.

The informal gathering starts at 7 p.m. at Lo Pub.

Guests are invited to make a donation to the Broadbent Institute in Layton's memory.

Memorials are planned across the country Wednesday. A bronze bust of the late politician was unveiled Tuesday at a Toronto cemetery.

It's based on a clay model sculpted by Layton’s widow, Olivia Chow.

Layton's ashes will be buried in a private ceremony Wednesday, before a public memorial in downtown Toronto.

Layton died of cancer a year ago Wednesday, three months after leading the NDP to official Opposition status for the first time.
