Winnipeg police say a driver who failed a breathalyzer test at a check stop on Saturday evening then made a decision that sent one of their officers to hospital.

It happened on Waverley Street near Lake Crest Road at about 8:30 p.m.

According to police, the man sped away while dragging an officer with the car.

"The officer's legs were being dragged alongside the vehicle,” said Const. Jason Michalyshen.

“My understanding is the vehicle was being operated near another vehicle where the officers lower body made contact with another vehicle."

Police could not say exactly how far the officer was dragged.

He had scrapes and bruises on the lower half of his body but has since been released from hospital.

While making his getaway, the driver went over a median, knocking down a street sign and leaking automotive fluids all the way down Lake Crest Road before turning onto Chancellor Drive.

The driver abandoned the car in the middle of the street and took off on foot.

Witnesses say he tore down some fence boards to enter a backyard and then disappeared.

"I guess he tried going through our door but it wouldn't open or tear down,” said Yasha Rizbi, who was home with her mom and sister at the time.

“And theirs looked more vulnerable so he tried going for theirs. We heard that,” she said pointing at her neighbour’s damaged fence.

Winnipeg police say the car was reported stolen when the made contact with the registered owner.

They have not identified any suspects but say the officer did get some information from the driver before performing the sobriety test.

"I'm not really in a position to give any further details with respect to what information we may or may not have with respect to the suspect involved so I'm going to have to be vague,” said Michalyshen.

Police say the investigation is ongoing.
