A big day for Canadian football fans is finally here. The 100th Grey Cup got underway in Toronto Sunday, with the Toronto Argonauts hosting the Calgary Stampeders.
The matchup was a disappointment for many Blue Bombers fans, who just last year were in the final game, facing off against the B.C. Lions in Vancouver.
Despite the lack of blue and gold on the field, Winnipeggers still took to their televisions to take in the big game.
“I’m a little disappointed. I’m a season-ticket holder, but I guess at the end of the day it’s the Grey Cup,” said Bombers’ fan Jesse Martin. “It’s a big thing, so we’ll cheer.”
And Martin will be cheering for the Stampeders, he says, because of their connection to Winnipeg.
“Obby Khan is there from the Bombers,” said Martin. On the other side is former Winnipeg Blue Bomber Kevin Glenn, now a quarterback for the Argonauts.
And though Martin is rooting for Khan and the Argonauts, in true Canadian fashion, he said, “I hope the best for Glenn.”
Fans across the city geared up to see the final CFL match up of the year and to catch a half-time performance with top-billed talent.
Martin’s sister Janeen will be watching alongside her brother at Legends Sports Bar, but unlike her brother, Janeen is cheering for the Argonauts.
Regardless of who takes home the cup, the pair said they’ll be back to rooting for the Bombers when they hit the field next season.
