Police arrested a 25-year-old man after an “aggressive shoplifter” went on a violent spree through Osborne Village Friday night.
The rampage started shortly before 2:00 p.m. in a store at the Safeway on River Avenue. A 65-year-old security guard noticed a shoplifter and tried to stop him when he was assaulted, police said.
The suspect fled the store and headed towards the Osborne Street Bridge. On the bridge, a 23-year-old man and a 53-year-old man were assaulted, suffering minor injuries.
After the suspect ran into traffic, a van was damaged. The suspect kept running to the west side of the bridge and jumped over the side, down to the bank of the Assiniboine River.
A police officer saw the assault on the bridge and chased the suspect down to the river. The suspect turned on the officer, who was forced to use pepper spray, police said.
When other officers arrived on scene, the suspect pulled out a weapon and threatened the officers. Eventually, the suspect responded to the officers’ demands to drop the weapon and was taken into custody.
Alexander Allan Albert Sanderson faces numerous charges related to the incident. He is being held at the Remand Centre.
