While many Winnipeggers are basking in the warm-winter weather, some businesses are facing challenges due to the unusual temperatures in the province.

In many parts of southern Manitoba, daytime highs have been hovering at or above the zero mark.

Many snowmobile trails across the province are currently closed.

Business owner Barry Golin is putting up signs advertising sales. He said he's reducing prices on jackets and other items in his snowmobile-clothing shop.

"Winter hasn't happened yet. Business is down 50 per cent. If it doesn't snow in a week or so, you're going to see sales prices that you haven't seen since the (1960s)," said Golin.

"You're praying for snow and hoping it comes," said Nick Hildebrand from Superior Asphalt. The snow-removal company is responsible for 175 parking lots.

Last year by the start of January, it had already cleared them nine times. So far this winter it's only cleared them twice.

While it has seen a slight increase in its de-icing business this year because of this year's temperatures, the company said it's worried it will have to let some of its workers go if more snow doesn't arrive soon.

"But (these) guys have been loyal to us…they've been with us for a long time. You don't want to lay guys off like that," said Hildebrand.

Festival du Voyageur, meanwhile, is gearing up to open the annual winter celebration in the middle of February.

Snow sculptures are a big part of Festival.

"We may see fewer sculptures…the snow may not be as nice as we like it to be," said Ginette Lavack Walters from Festival. "We're hoping mother nature cooperates with us."

Organizers of Festival said other aspects could be scaled back next month, such as the river slide, which may not be in use if warm weather persists.

Some skaters at The Forks also said the warm weather has an impact on conditions there.

"Your skates dig in a little bit – it could be a little bit harder," said Pat Palanuk. Despite the challenges of the ice, Palanuk was still enjoying the warm temperatures outside Wednesday.

While outdoor skating rinks are open at The Forks, the skating trail along the river is not yet open.

Officials with The Forks said it's being delayed because of the warm weather, but will open once it's ready.
