Manitoba Corrections and the Independent Investigation Unit of Manitoba are looking into the death of a man in custody at Winnipeg's Remand Centre.

The man died Wednesday morning.

On Thursday, the IIU released a statement saying they had opened an investigation into the death.

They said that during the processing procedure at the centre, a struggle broke out and the man “suffered a medical emergency and became unresponsive”. The man was taken by ambulance to Health Sciences Centre, where he was pronounced dead.

Citing privacy reasons, Corrections isn't revealing information such as the man's name or why the man was in custody.

The Office of the Chief Medical Examiner has also been told about the death.
