Manitoba Premier Greg Selinger says the province is bringing in a new retail subsidy program to promote affordable, healthy foods for northern communities.

Selinger says some families in northern communities find themselves paying extremely high prices for everyday food staples, such as 14 dollars and 99 cents for four litres of milk.

He says the province is taking action by allowing some retailers subsidies on fresh milk, vegetable and fruit purchases and by exploring ways to improve access to such food in some of the communities.

The program, dubbed Affordable Food in Remote Manitoba -- or AFFIRM -- will be begin this fall as a pilot project in 10 communities including Berens River, York Landing and Churchill.
