A rally was held at the Winnipeg Remand Centre Wednesday to put pressure on the Manitoba justice system.

Organizers said in their eyes, officials need to be more accountable.

The rally comes one day after an inmate died in custody at the centre.

Details about the death aren’t yet known.

“There’s been next to no response from Manitoba Justice, from the Remand Centre, from the union that represents the guards in there (or) from really anyone that has any power over the situation,” rally organizer Stephane Doucet said.

“We wanted to give people the chance to mourn again and call out the remand centre for killing people four times this year already.”

It’s the second death at the facility in two weeks, and the fourth death there this year.

On March 17th, Hollie Hall died in custody.

Less than two months later, Errol Greene died on May 1st after a medical emergency at the facility.

Another man died at the centre on October 12th.

The next day, Manitoba’s Independent Investigation’s Unit said in a press release, “a struggle ensued and the affected person suffered a medical emergency and became unresponsive.”

An ambulance took the inmate to hospital where he was pronounced dead.

In an email statement, the union that represents guards at the Remand Centre, Manitoba's General Employee's Union, said:

“The Province needs to clear the air – by bringing the investigations of these recent deaths to a conclusion, and by meeting with the families of these inmates. Correctional Officers work under challenging, stressful, and often dangerous conditions. They take very seriously their professional responsibility to ensure a safe environment for both inmates and their co-workers.”
