Kids at Downsview Secondary School in Toronto wore orange Friday in a push to raise funds for students thousands of kilometres away in Manitoba.

The dress code was for Orange Shirt Day, a fundraiser that recognizes the harm the residential school system did to kids’ self-esteem and well-being.

Students at DSS not only wore orange, they also had a sale featuring all things in the fall hue, including baked goods, orange juice and cheese pizza.

The fundraiser is collecting money for Mikisew School, its sister school in Pimicikamak Cree Nation, about 770 kilometres north of Winnipeg. The funds will be used to buy a 3D printer and 300 books for its new library.
