Members of Parliament sat down with union officials in Winnipeg on Friday to push for tougher laws to protect city bus drivers.

Officials say drivers report 2,000 violent incidents every year. The attacks range from being spat on, punched, knife attacks, and sexual assault.

Liberal MP Ralph Goodale proposed a bill calling for stricter sentencing against attackers, something he calls important not only for driver safety, but riders as well.

"That's a very big number,” said Goodale. “I think there’s a growing momentum coming together to say we have to do something about this at a lot of different levels."

If passed, the bill would help judges apply tougher sentences on attackers found guilty. Goodale says it could also be applied to others who provide transportation, such as taxi drivers.
